Experience The Wave and North Coyote Buttes
The Wave is one of the world’s most unusual and beautiful sandstone formations, located in the desert at the border between Arizona and Utah. It is protected, along with the surrounding area of North Coyote Buttes, out of respect for its breathtaking beauty and fragility.
We’ll provide transport to the trailhead and a knowledgeable guide who’ll help you navigate through the harsh desert landscape, on foot, towards The Wave. Once you get there you can wander freely and explore the smooth curves and rolling formations that swell around the entire area. Drink in the dusty reds of swirling strata and marvel at the contrast between the rusty rocks and brilliant blue skies above, and see for yourself why this is such a special and rewarding hiking experience.
We’ll make sure you get the most out of your permit by also exploring the surrounding area of North Coyote Buttes and tick off other must-see formations such as The Second Wave, Fatali’s Boneyard, Cheeseburger Rock, Dinosaur Tracks, and the Neon Buttes (as time, weather and hiking ability allow). All the while your guide will be on hand to offer expert knowledge on the area’s history, plants, geology and wildlife.
If you want to pack in as much as possible into your Wave experience, you can also add on a visit to Wire Pass Slot Canyon.
Permit Info
The Wave and surrounding area of North Coyote Buttes are protected by local laws put in place to respect the structure as well as those who visit. Just 20 permits are issued each day to hikers, selected via a nail-biting lottery system!

Online Lottery
Online permit applications are entered 4 months in advance. If you enter later in the month, you will be able to see which days have the most applications entered already, thereby giving you the advantage of choosing days that have fewer applicants (if you have that luxury in scheduling).
• You can enter the lottery online for $5 and then must pay an additional $7 per permit, per person, if you are lucky enough to be selected. The $5 lottery entrance fee is non-refundable. Dogs are $7 each. Apply online here.
• A maximum of 6 people per application is allowed.
• If you plan on using our services as guides, choose Wire Pass as the Trailhead and enter Kanab Tour Company for the license plate number. Note that we operate Monday through Saturday.
• You do not need to obtain a permit for your guide as we carry our own guiding permissions from the Bureau of Land Management.
• If you are lucky and win a permit, it will be mailed to you at the address on your application. You can then call us and schedule a tour.
Coyote Buttes North (“The Wave”) Lottery Schedule:
In-Person Lottery
This is a nail-biting event held at the Bureau of Land Management Visitor Center in Kanab. Here, crowds from 50-250 people gather every morning during the high season (5 days/week during the slower season) to put their names into the draw for 10 permits. The room is dead quiet as everyone awaits their fate. Each application is assigned a number, and old-fashioned wooden BINGO balls are placed into a roller cage representing each number. The Bureau of Land Management employee will roll the cage around until a ball drops. They will announce the number, and there will generally be cheers from somewhere in the room.
• During the spring, summer and fall months, the in-person lottery is held 7 days a week, the day before your preferred hike date. During the winter months, the lottery is held Monday-Friday, the day before your preferred hike date, with Friday’s drawing allotting permits for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
• The Drawing is held at 9:00 am (MT).
• There is no lottery entrance fee when applying in person, you’ll just need to pay the $7 per permit, per person if you are lucky enough to be selected. Dogs are $7 each.
• If you’re planning ahead, we can apply in person for you with our “stand-in service.” The cost of this is $50. If your party is lucky at the lottery, you will also need to pay $7 per permit, per person.
• We can stand-in for a maximum of five people. The “stand-in service” fee may be applied to our guiding services, whether it be to the Wave or any other area. The $50 is non-refundable if you are unlucky in selection. Contact us for more info about this service.
• Permits are available year-round and can be easier to obtain in the winter.

My guide, Kat, was amazing!!! She took me to the Wave by myself and took the time to show me so much more than I ever imagined, so much more than anybody else would have showed me. She was also super sweet and personable. I loved getting to know her. She treated me like a friend and I’ll never forget that. Read More
We booked a tour since we were fortunate enough to win the lottery to hike to the wave and also because I wanted to surprise my girlfriend by proposing in the middle of the wave. Nick was our tour guide and it could not have been a better experience. He ensured the moment was perfect and took some amazing photos to capture it all. Overall the experience was one of the, if not the, most memorable days of our lives.
